What Are You Talking About, Mr?
Today, it was the Secondary 2s' turn to sit for their level assembly. For some reason, the first part of the assembly was conducted in Mandarin(but suddenly reverted back to English). So, the dialogue, too, was conducted in Mandarin by our deputy principal, Mr Tan. The motion discussed was, "The new school timetable: Boon or Bane?" After the speakers had given their speeches, the discussion was opened to the floor to express our opinions. Students stepped to the microphones to provide their views. Many complained about the detriments of the new timetable. At the end of the dialogue, Mr Tan then started his "values" teaching. Basically, what he told us was to share and be gentlemen, Hwa Chong gentlemen. This may sound irrelevant to the whole discussion at first and many of us were puzzled. However, here is my take on it. So, what is sharing? Do we share for the sake of sharing? This may sound cliche, but I feel that this is really true. Sharing is the greatest form of "happiness". Being able to put a smile on people's faces, the satisfaction gained is really indescribable. Giving is always better than taking, even it means sacrificing certain things. Does this has any relevance to our discussion? To a certain extent, it does. We must never be calculative. Every matter comes with benefits and detriments. We can never achieve anything by going around problems, but facing it head on. Thus, even if it means adapting to the problem, or overcoming it, there is no running away from it. Well, this is my take on his insightful teachings. What's yours?
