Preparations for 3 Written Language Arts Examinations
Paper 1 - Writing - 1h 45minThe two components of writing are narrative writing and situational writing. For situational writing, I will definitely have to practise the format of a letter, just to get the structure of the letter right. Secondly, I will have to capture the tone of the letter. The way I express myself is critical. Hence, reading up notes provided is essential. Notes can allow me to write a convincing and well-written paper. Lastly, I must learn to write tight. Writing a few more microfictions would help. Of course, time management is important, I would time myself for a simulation paper. Moving on to the narrative writing. Narrative writing is more on constructing creative and engaging stories. A key element would be that the writing be concise too. Thus, writing another few microfictions would not only allow me to write to the point, but allow me to think out of the box too.
Paper 2 - Comprehension - 1h 45min
I feel that there is not much to study for comprehension. It is really based on my understanding of the passage after reading it. Hence, whenever I read a passage, I would pose myself with different types of questions and see if I could answer them. Through this, I would put myself in both the person setting the question and answering it. To widen my vocbulary, I would be checking up the dictionary for any 'foreign' words I come across. Summarizing requires writing short and tight, but also capturing the gist of the story. So, I would read certain passages or short stories. Then, I would rewrite the story in probably a few sentences, just to write as short as I possibly can.
Paper 3 - Literature Strand 1 - 1h 45min
This paper, I must say, is my weakest link. My inability to express myself and thinking a few steps deeper of the poem/prose is a major factor of my low marks throughout term 3. All I can do will be thouroughly analysing the past model answers that were provided for previous papers and learn how to think deep instead of writing aboout the surface of the poem/prose. I would look through all the notes about figure of speech and structures. I would definitely try to reread Animal Farm if possible. Then, I would familiarise myself with the storyline and individual characters and their relation to the Russian Revolution. I would ask myself potential questions and focus on the major parts and roles of the story.
Tips: Contrary to Dr. Hon's saying that Language Arts need not be studied, I feel that studying Language Arts is just as important as memorising notes for Geography or History. The difference, of course would be that Language Arts requires lots of analysis and a strong foundation. Language Arts is my weakest subject, sadly, but I would try my best to pick up. I would stay calm during the examination and practice, practice and more practice my writing! Good luck to all!
