Major Blog Assignment - Who Am I? After countless of songs, and I mean COUNTLESS, I finally decided to go with this song - Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. Firstly, this would be a tribute for the late King of Pop and I would like to pay my deepest respects to him. It is about him wanting to make a change in the world, but has to change himself first. So here is the studio version of his song, this was the best video I could find as most of the others were live with the audience screaming. ![]() Here are the lyrics to the song: Ooh ooh ooh aah Gotta make a change For once in my life It's gonna feel real good Gonna make a difference Gonna make it right As I turned up the collar on A favorite winter coat This wind is blowin' my mind I see the kids in the street With not enough to eat Who am I to be blind Pretending not to see their needs A summer's disregard A broken bottle top And a one man's soul They follow each other On the wind ya' know 'Cause they got nowhere to go That's why I want you to know I'm starting with the man in the mirror I'm asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place Take a look at yourself and then make a change, yey Na na na, na na na, na na na na oh ho I've been a victim of A selfish kinda love It's time that I realize There are some with no home Not a nickel to loan Could it be really pretending that they're not alone A willow deeply scarred Somebody's broken heart And a washed out dream (Washed out dream) They follow the pattern of the wind ya' see 'Cause they got no place to be That's why I'm starting with me I'm starting with the man in the mirror I'm asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place Take a look at yourself and then make a change I'm starting with the man in the mirror I'm asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place Take a look at yourself and then make that change I'm starting with the man in the mirror (Man in the mirror, oh yeah) I'm asking him to change his ways, yeah (Change) No message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place Take a look at yourself and then make the change You gotta get it right, while you got the time 'Cause when you close your heart (You can't close your, your mind) Then you close your mind (That man, that man, that man) (That man, that man, that man) (With the man in the mirror, oh yeah) (That man you know, that man you know) (That man you know, that man you know) I'm asking him to change his ways (Change) No message could have been any clearer If you wanna make the world a better place Take a look at yourself then make that change (Na na na, na na na, na na na na) Ooh Oh yeah Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah (Na na na, na na na, na na na na) Oh no Oh no, I'm gonna make a change It's gonna feel real good Sure mon (Change) Just lift yourself You know, you got to stop it yourself (Yeah) Oh Make that change (I gotta make that change today, oh) (Man in the mirror) You got to, you got to not let yourself, brother oh Yeah You know that (Make that change) (I gotta make that make me then make) You got, you got to move Sure mon, sure mon You got to (Stand up, stand up, stand up) Make that change Stand up and lift yourself, now (Man in the mirror) Make that change (Gonna make that change, sure mon) (Man in the mirror) You know it, you know it, you know it, you know (Change) Make that change Analysis Time for the analysis. This song, really reflects how I feel about myself as I constantly want to improve and strive forward and "make a change". Let's start. ![]() For the first verse, "I'm gonna make a change" reveals that the singer wants to change, just like how I want to change certain aspects in my life. He uses "gonna" repeatedly in 4 lines to emphasize the desire to fufil his wishes to change. The events happening in the second verse cannot be seen in Singapore. However, here is my take on it. "As I turn up the collar on" means that the singer has a coat that has a collar literally, implying that he is fortunate enough to have necessities in life. However, the wind is still "blowin' my mind". In other words, he can't block the wind from blowing at his head and he still ponders about his luck compared to the poor "kids in the street". He wants to help them; he does not want "to be blind". This exactly captures who I am. I regard success as the number of people I can make happy. I want to lend a helping hand, especially to the less fortunate and hence, want to work hard and progress in life. In the chorus, "man in the mirror" really means himself since mirror reflects the object in front of it. In this case, the man looking into the mirror is the central image in the song which means that this reflection that the narrator is going through is the key observation of the song. It is a period of self realisation and understanding himself. ![]() In the next verse, the singer confesses he has been "a victim of a selfish kinda love", explaining that he had probably been greedy or being inconsiderate. I, too, have these kind of selfish acts. In fact, I believe that everyone has. ![]() The singer repeats the word "wind" to emphasize that the poverty are homeless and they roam around without a "place to be". For me, I follow my heart to complete things, just like the wind - free. He then repeats "start" in this verse and the chorus to emphasize that if you want to improve, you really have to start with yourself and from your heart. --Chorus-- In the last verse, the singer repeats "It's gonna feel real good". Of course, it feels great when you find yourself improving right? My learning style: Interpersonal Based on my learning style, I have created a short play. Here is the script. Enjoy. (Mikel Johnson walks into the principal's, Mrs S., office.) Mrs S.: Johnson, have a seat. Johnson: I'm really sorry, Mrs S. I really didn't mean to cheat. I just wanted to improve my grades and please my parents. Make a change. Mrs S.: I know how you feel, Johnson. We all want to satisfy others, make others feel glad. However, you can't change other people feelings without changing yourself. You understand? Johnson: I understand Mrs S. Well, to be honest, I really wasn't sure what I was doing. It just sorta happened "unknowingly". I just followed my heart. Mrs S.: Remember this Johnson, we ALL make mistakes, all committed foolish acts. I'm not an exception. Just strive to always improve. How 'bout this. Once you reach home, dig deep into your soul and self-evaluate. You should truly understand who you are. Johnson: I'll be sure to do that, Mrs S. Mrs S.: Also, don't always follow your heart. Differentiate what's right and wrong before starting on anything. (Johnson nods his head.) Mrs S.: Now, I gotta alot of work to do. Get going! Johnson: Okay. I'm sorry Mrs s. I'll promise not to do it again. (Johnson turns to leave.) Mrs S.: Oh by the way, I won't be calling up your parents. Not for first-time offenders, at least! (A big smile lights up on Johnson face.) Johnson: Thanks! Mother's comments My son has captured one of the important points about himself. Since young, he has always been wanting to improve and surpass others. He, I must say, is a very passionate young man. Comment | 2 Comments |
